Wolves in Yellowstone

After that class discussion on the oversized elk herd in yellowstone, I started to wonder why it would be that the NPS would want to discourage variables that would keep the population down. The main thing that I thought of was the idea that more predators in the park might detract from tourism, the real reason there is a park in the first place. I specificallt looked at the reintroduction of wolves into the park. I think that I must have been wrong though, all I found were things articles that prasied the wolves, even for their value to the tourism industry. Here's one link that I found.

Growing up I visited Yellowstone almost every summer and I was never interested in seeing the elk or the bison. Just like your link suggested I was interested in seeing grizzlies and wolves. They do in deed attract a lot of toursim. In your link it said "Western cultures are having a love affair with large predators -- to have them and preserve them is something that people are almost demanding through the legislative process." I find survey results suggesting that elk are the number one tourist attraction hard to believe and I question their credibility. Large predators have extreme aesthetic value and if the National Parks want more visitors that is what they should have available for them to see, or at least their habitat like the link suggests.
