An easy way to Reduce emissions
After today's class discussion on car emissions and what can be done about it I am still split on whether required emission testing or random radar inspection is the best method. One idea that I did find here towards the bottom of the page is benefits of turning off your engine when stopped, except for in traffic. Instead of leaving your car on to keep it warm turning it off reduces emissions greatly. Other emission reducing tips that are much more convenient than not driving at all can also be found at the above mentioned link.

Interesting tips. So the summary is, when you're starting a car during the winter:
(1) Clear snow off your vehicle. Note the air intake on top or your hood.
(2) Start the car.
(3) If the car is cold, let it idle for about 30 seconds.
(4) Get going.
(5) If you are stopping for longer than 10 seconds or so (outside of traffic), turn off your car - it's more fuel efficient.
(6) Try to be quick in your errands, as your car will still be warm when you return.
(7) Hope you don't get ticketed by campus police for turning off your car in a permit-parking area.
