Logging in Sequoia Forest
The Bush administration has proposed logging to be done in the Sequoia Forest 'redwoods in San Fran. California'. Bill Clinton protected this forest as a national monument, and George Bush Sr. set up that the Sequoia Groves be off limits to logging. Earlier this month the Bush administration reversed those protections so that logging could be done in the forest. The proposal allows 7.5 million board feet to be taken out annually, this equals out to be 1,500 logging trucks each year. It also allows logging of healthy trees of any species as big as 30 inches in diameter, trees of that size can be up to 200 years old. I will be looking that up later but thought that this was an intersting article.

As a model for better management, the Sierra Club and others are asking the Bush administration to look to nearby Sequoia National Park, where innovative conservation and fire prevention strategies have reinvigorated the Sequoia groves and made nearby communities safer.Speaking as someone who has been to both Sequoia National Park and Sequoia National Monument, I believe the Sierra Club is using scare tactics again. In these "Giant sequoia forests" almost none of the trees are sequoias. Worse, the sequoia population has been minimized by fire prevention efforts by the federal government. Fire is an essential part of sequoia growth (the seeds can't grow without it), and their "innovative conservation and fire prevention strategies" have only made things worse. Clearing away some of the smaller trees would allow some tightly controlled burns to maintain the sequoia groves in the forest.
I do not understand the need to cut Sequoia's. Sequoias are extremely hardy trees that live for over a thousand years. So they are not in danger of being destroyed by fire (lets face it in the 1,400 years some of these trees have lived they have survived many fires). So cutting them down by doing a clearing effort to reduce fires is off. These trees are also not prone to insect diseases, so that Japanese beetle that has destroyed the millions of trees have little affect on these trees. More info on Sequoias can be found here

The point of my comment was that they won't necessarily be cutting Sequoias. Most so-called "Sequoia forests" consist of maybe half a dozen groves of Sequoias and several hundred thousand other trees.
As for fires, not only is there minimal danger of severe fire damage to the Sequoias themselves, occasional burning is required for sequoias to reproduce.
Here is a thesis that discusses this aspect of sequoia growth. For an excerpt:
"Post-fire giant sequoia seedling establishment was proportional to fire severity, with increasing fire severity resulting in larger percentages of adult sequoias with surrounding seedling establishment as well as larger numbers of seedlings present (more adults associated with clumps of seedlings or continuous seedling cover). Unburned sites had almost no sequoia seedling establishment." (Emphasis added.)
So if we are careful about how we manage the situation, we will increase the Sequoia population, instead of hurting it as supposedly environmentally friendly policies have done in the past.
